El 5 de agosto de 1943 nació en Orange County (California) la cantante de country Sammi Smith. A los once anos abandonó la escuela y comenzó a cantar profesionalmente en los night clubs de la zona. Con quince anos ya estaba casada y tuvo cuatro hijos antes de divorciarse y mudarse a Nashville en 1967.
Uno de sus hijos, Waylon Payne, es actor y encarnó el papel de Jerry Lee Lewis en el film 'I walk the line', biopic sobre Johnny Cash. Precisamente Cash fue el que la descubrió y el que le consiguió un contrato con Columbia Records con los que Sammi grabó algún éxito menor como 'So long Charlie Brown, don't look for me around' (1968). En 1970 cambia de companía y por fin, un ano después, publica su gran éxito 'Help me make it through the night' escrita por Kris Kristofferson.
Consigue con su versión el no1 en las listas country, el top10 en las listas pop, un Grammy y más de dos millones en ventas. Siguieron otros pequenos éxitos como 'Then you walked in' y 'I've got to have you' y en 1973 se mudó a Dallas donde tomó contacto con Waylon Jennings y Willie Nelson entrando a formar parte del movimiento 'outlaw'.
En 1975 obtuvo un Top5 en las listas de country con 'Today I started loving you again' y otros hits menores fueron 'Loving arms' (1977) y 'Cheatin's a two way street' (1981). A finales de los ochenta se alejó de las grabaciones y se dedicó a luchar por los derechos de los Apaches. Murió a los 61 anos en febrero de 2005.

Born Jewel Faye Smith, she is best known for her 1971 country/pop crossover hit, "Help Me Make It Through the Night", which was written by Kris Kristofferson. She became one of the few women in the outlaw country movement during the 1970s.
On February 12, 2005, at the age of 61, Sammi Smith died at her home in Oklahoma City. Although the cause of her death was never confirmed, it was known that Smith was a heavy smoker. Her remains were buried in Guymon, Oklahoma, which she claimed was her home town (in a Hee Haw episode that aired Jan 1, 1973).
To mark Sammi Smith's long career, a tribute album was released in her honor on September 26, 2006, titled Help Me Make It Through the Night: The Memorial Album. It featured all of her biggest hits from the 1970s.
